The old synagogue “Bejt- Szmuel” in Bialystok was built in 1899 and burnt by the nazis during world war 2, although it was later rebuilt and used as cinema and sports centre, and even a police training facility.

The city council wants to recover and extend it to become the city council offices respecting its history and simbolism.

The plot is located at the end of an important sequence of green areas so the proposal that TASka presented in collaboration with Arizcuren Arquitectos extends the green zone by incorporating a vertical garden to the synagogue’s facade.

The new city council main office is covered by a green blanket, an extension to the garden, which climbs the back facade and transforms in a dual cover which hangs from the two sides of the building highlighting the two main entrances.

For the new buildings the synagogue is extended in both sides using light structures with a glass cover.
